Begin with a block of wood, and end with your own hand crafted usable utensil! In this workshop, students will learn the basics of carving a wooden spoon using chisels and a carving knife. A demonstration will be given with each step to guide students throughout the entire process. Students will first practice their skills before moving on to what will become your final project. By the end of the workshop, students will have at least one completed spoon. Additional decorative options and skills may be covered as time allows.

HURTLING TOWARD OBLIVION -TurnMusic Quartet concert curated by Mary Rowell features “Dig the Say” by Vijay Iyer as the centerpiece of the show. A study exploring the intricacies of James Brown’s musical genius in 4 continuous movements whose titles refer to Brown’s 1969 song “I Don’t Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open Up the Door I’ll get in Myself). The program will include a contemplation of fantasy and dreams with Missy Mazzoli “Quartet for Queen Mab”; the wonder of the space we exist in with Shelly Washington “Middleground”; folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement with Jessie Montgomery “STRUM”; the fearless relevance of Kyle Saulier “at the edge of a world not unlike our own”; the world premiere of “Nadia” (translation hope) by Erik Nielsen, a work dedicated to the people of Ukraine. Let’s gather to learn the art of Shibori & Indigo dye!

In this workshop, we’ll experiment with the different techniques of Shibori (a Japanese dye technique where fabric is folded, twisted, and bound to create patterns before being dipped into dye) to create unique patterns and shades of Indigo blue. The binds in the fabric will resist the dye, creating beautiful and interesting patterns with different shades of blue. There are endless ways to do Shibori, and in this workshop you’ll get to explore and play with the techniques that inspire you. You’ll discover that you can use the technique to dye anything from clothing and accessories to home items.

Two white cotton floursack towels will be supplied for everyone to experiment with, and feel free to bring your own dye-ables from home!
