Passeggiata Waterbury

A Casual Community Stroll

Join in Waterbury's weekly passeggiata on Wednesday evenings in the warm months! Stroll around town, chat with a neighbor, stop for a snack or drink, and just enjoy the community.

Passeggiata means "walk" or "stroll" in Italian, and refers to the tradition of leisurely walking at the end of the day in a central area among others who are doing the same thing. Beyond Italy, this evening stroll ritual occurs in Spain (the Paseo), Greece (the Volta), and several Middle Eastern cities.

The passeggiata in Italy and beyond has a communal feel and is a way to shift from day to evening; it is intentionally slow-paced and not meant as a workout. However, from a health standpoint, seeing each other and talking enhances the well-known physical benefits of regular walking. These downtown strolls strengthen community identity by creating a casual, simple gathering.

Waterbury's passeggiata will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings in the warmer months, with different events and activities happening throughout the season. Everyone is welcome to join at their own pace and schedule, with passeggiatas roughly beginning in late May on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm-8:30 pm, with more information about specific events to come.

Businesses are encouraged to stay open late and offer Italian-inspired specials, and musicians are welcome to perform downtown, with information to come as the schedule develops. If you are interested in planning an event or activity to coincide with the passeggiata, or want to talk about ways to get involved, reach out to Ingrid Jonas at [email protected].
